Alternative Loans

Alternative loan programs can be used help students take more credits than just federal funding would normally allow. Alternative loans do require the student to pass a credit check preformed by the lender or have a credit worthy Co-signer. For a student to have any chance of receiving an alternative loan without a Co-signer they would need excellent credit and and yearly income of at least $18,000. Co-signers are recommended for all student borrowers as having a Co-signer on the loan will usually provide better rates.

Alternative loans should be used only after all other funding options have been explored and used, this would include PLUS loans for dependent students.  All the federal loan options will offer better terms than the alternative loans in regards to interest rate, deferment/forbearance options, and repayment plans.  If you are unsure if you have exhausted all your other funding options than you should contact the financial aid office at your campus for additional guidance before completing an alternative loan application
