Meet: Stephanie Heald-Fisher
Educational Background
BA in Business Management from Alverno College; MBA from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater; Doctoral learner at Capella University.
Professional Background
I worked for what is now US Bank for 21 years. I started as a part-time teller and rose through the ranks – full-time teller, head teller, Personal Banker, Personal Banking Manager, and Assistant Vice President of Quality Administration. I left the bank to manage a golf resort owned by my grandmother. After 3 years in which I turned the resort around from a “has-been” to a vibrant business, my family sold the resort. The next step was to start my own business which is where I’m at now. My husband and I own a retail shop. About 9 years ago, after I had earned my MBA, I started a concurrent career as an adjunct faculty member at several local colleges.
Courses I Teach
I am still somewhat new at MSB and currently teach Advertising and Promotion. In the past, I have also taught Marketing and Advanced Marketing, Management, Employee Development, and Finance courses.
Courses I Have Developed
The Advertising and Promotion course upgraded to a new edition of the text, and I have developed the master course to dovetail with this new edition. I have also developed courses for other schools in the topics I have taught.
Personal Interests and Hobbies
I am an avid golfer, and in my next life, I hope to come back as a professional! I am also a big baseball fan in spite of the fact that I cheer for a losing team. I enjoy attending both baseball and softball games. Other hobbies include crosswords and other puzzles, reading, and cross-stitching.
Why I Enjoy Teaching at MSB Online
Teaching at MSB Online is very enjoyable because of the students I meet, the learning tools available, and the opportunities to make a course more current and viable for the students. I find that the students are knowledgeable in their own right and very willing to share their personal expertise and experience in a subject when they are given the opportunity. MSB Online provides a number of different tools in which to make the topic “come alive” for the students. It’s not just reading a text, writing an assignment, and answering a discussion question. There are lots of other resources such as external web sites or video clips that are available to instructors.
Why I Believe In Online Education
In addition to being an online instructor, I am an online student. This gives me a unique perspective into online education. Online education opens up a world of opportunity to talented individuals who may not have the chance to increase their knowledge and education otherwise. For example, I live at least 3 hours (one way) from the nearest university which offers a doctorate. Yet, thanks to online learning, I am ABD and currently working on my dissertation. It also offers working adults or stay-at-home parents the flexibility they need to obtain an education that a traditional venue does not have. Another benefit is that online learning enables the students to work with a much more diverse class than they might otherwise have in an on-ground course. I find online learning to be more interactive when compared to the lecture format of many on-ground courses. Students come away with a more practical understanding of their topic. In my opinion, online learning is the wave of the future in education and a trend that is positive, beneficial to the students, and here to stay!
